ARLINGTON PARISH COUNCIL

February 2007

PARISH COUNCIL

MEETINGS

The Parish Council met on the 23rd January to discuss planning applications. In addition, two unauthorized development matters have been referred to Wealden D. C..  At the February meeting topics included the allotments, data protection legislation and the Annual Meeting of the Parish. The annual meeting will take place on 26th. April 2007.  The main item will be the development of the parish plan.  This will take quite some time so it will not be possible to receive the usual verbal reports from the organizations active within the parish. It has been suggested that written reports could be available on the evening or a special Newsletter publicising the reports.

PARKMEAD

Park Mead is happy to report that the new hall, and structural and decorative improvements to the school have continued to attract increasing numbers of pupils.  As a result of the larger intake,

the school is in a better financial

position than it has been for many years. Park Mead juniors starred in a play, ‘Hot Dog’, directed by the drama company ‘Act On It’, in conjunction with the Children’s Fire and Burns Trust. This resulted in a production which enabled a serious message, about dangers in the home, to be put across in a fun and engaging way. The pupils presented the play to the whole school, parents and representatives from the Trust (and made the front page of the Sussex Express!). Kew at Wakehurst. Children of all ages (accompanied) are invited to take part in free activities during the half term 20th – 22nd February from 10.30am to 3.30pm.  Activities include: Following a trail to find out about plants used to make natural dyes; a display demonstrating how dyes are made; opportunities to have a go on spinning and knitting and other arts and crafts. The Governors wish to thank councillors who helped to collect Tesco Sports Vouchers in 2006.  Nearly 5˝ thousand vouchers were collected. Tracey Hunter, LEA Governor

PARISH COUNCIL

ELECTIONS

In May 2007 local elections will take place when voters in parishes, towns and district councils will elect their representatives. Arlington, like other parishes will be involved in the elections when local residents have the opportunity to stand for office and vote.  The parish council is at the grass roots of  Local Government in England. Parish Councils have a number of

responsibilities, including: representing the whole electorate within the parish; delivering

services to meet local needs; and striving to improve quality of life in the parish. The council is also the first point of contact for aspiring community projects. It is their responsibility to help get schemes underway. The Council must also be notified – and in some cases its consent is needed – by County or District Councils with regard to planning applications and highway development in your area. Parliament also granted Parish Councils the powers to spend public money that they raise through the parish precept. If you are interested

in learning more about becoming a councillor please contact the clerk.

FREE FIRE SAFETY CHECKS

Do you know an elderly or vulnerable person who you feel might be at risk of fire in their home? Then please help them to contact the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to arrange for a free home safety visit. Prevention is the main aim of the fire service, so crews are visiting homes to offer safety advice and fit free smoke alarms.  The Home Safety Visit scheme is totally free. The local fire crew will phone first to arrange a convenient time – either weekday, evening or weekend. They will then call round, check for any potential fire hazards, offer clear and straightforward fire safety advice, and fit smoke alarms.

The visit should only take about 30 minutes. To arrange a visit for yourself or on behalf of a friend or relative either call free on 0800 177 7069 or visit the East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service website and follow the Home Safety Visits link to book online.
