The Parish of Arlington lies in East Sussex some eight miles north of Eastbourne and ten miles to the east of Lewes. The area has been settled since early times including Roman and Anglo Saxon periods. Michelham Priory (founded 1229) was occupied as a priory until the dissolution in 1537. It stands proud today and continues to be enjoyed by tourists and visitors interested in its history. The Priory is on the river Cuckmere which runs through the Parish. There has been a watermill at the site from early times and there is a written record of this in 1434. The Parish is mainly rural with the population centred on the two villages of Upper Dicker and Arlington. Upper Dicker is the home of St. Bede's Independent Boarding School There are Village Halls at both Arlington and Upper Dicker and the Parish Council meets at each hall in rotation. There are some 400 residents on the electoral register. PARISH CLERK: Mrs Katrina Larkin arlingtonclerk@btinternet.com Tel : 01323 811870 The Old Cottage, Lewes Road, Laughton. BN8 6BQ |
